Special effects (SFX) artists use a variety of of skills and techniques to create effects and illusions without CGI for a variety of applications in film and theater. The work of SFX artists can be seen in musicals like Phantom of the Opera, as well as movies like How the Grinch Stole Christmas. SFX are also a staple in thriller and horror movies, with latex, mannequins, of buckets of fake blood working together to portray the impression

The work of SFX artists combines a number of different disciplines, including but not limited to law, the sciences, and art. SFX artists are expected to be knowledgeable on various types of engineering, artistic techniques like sculpture and casting, and state and federal safety regulations surrounding things like pyrotechnics, among other things. SFX artists often set their own hours, but these hours must work with the schedule and production timeline of whatever production they are working on.

A variety of majors can contribute to a successful career as a SFX artists, including fine arts, mechanical engineering, and theatrical design. While few schools offer a specific SFX education, a number of places have a specific SFX artist program, some of the highest-ranked being the Cinema Makeup School, the Vancouver Film School, and Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program at Douglas Education Center.
