Even in elementary school, I held a passion for drawing. However, I think my art has had the most significant growth this year, specifically in my understanding of a composition. I vaguely understood the rule of thirds, but I think in this class, I've gotten a better idea of what a good composition is, and a better sense for identifying one. I haven't grown the most there, though, because I still struggle with it a bit I've learned more...

Process Post - AB EX

For my AB EX process, I felt like I drew a lot from Basquiat and de Koonig. I know Basquiat isn't an AB EX painter, but his whole thing of taking things from pop culture or whatever media he might've been consuming at the time was something I incorporated into my art, in a much more abstract sense. Like, I did marks based on the music I was listening to, or I'd do a blind contour of a scene from a movie or a well-known painting, and then paint it in. I did a lot for slapping paint on the...

Awareness Post-Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin is an American photographer, born just 2 hours away from Richmond in Washington DC. While photography isn't my primary medium, I found her art striking, and interesting, so I decided to do my posts on her. Goldin explored themes of sexuality and intimacy within her photos, but I just chose two PG images that I really, really liked. The work of SFX artists can be seen in musicals like Phantom of the Opera, as well as movies like How the Grinch Stole Christmas. As you can see, it's not much. I struggled a bit with the lighting, especially on the stuffed animal, as the whole thing kind of looked gray, so I wasn't sure if it was the lighting or the stuffed animal itself. I was also worried about adding too much shade into the perfume bottle, since it's mostly clear. Also, a lot of the shapes kind of got lost in the shadows, especially with the rocks being on the crease of the scarf. But, for...

Still Life Process

For my Still Life, I chose to do an "Identity" Still Life, with some stones I collected, my perfume, one of my stuffed animals, a headpiece from my Shinobu cosplay, and one of my mom's head scarves. Originally, the painting was going to be much wider, but I scaled down to make the composition more interesting. These were my thumbnail sketches. Now that I'm getting a better look at them, they kind of look the same. But I was trying to put one at a more diagonal, dynamic angle. I'm not entirely sure the face looks like me--the eyes are off somehow. However, I do think everything is technically correct, so at least it looks like someone's face. I think my favorite part of the whole process was the hair. I would've enjoyed it more if I had more time, though, but I really enjoyed the tedium of it. I'd roll out a length of clay, score and slip the head, and then attach it on. Once I was done with all that, I use the back...

Artist Copy Process

I'm not sure there are that many victories on this work. I guess liked how the white highlights made it look. From far away it looked really shiny. Some challenges were the legs. I like to think of the shading as a bunch of shapes, and I couldn't make myself see all the shading as a leg. It just didn't work for me mentally. One lesson I learned is that zooming in or focusing one part rather than the entire image.
